Dunking Through History: Biscotti Day Brews Up Tradition

A Crunchy Companion: Celebrating Biscotti with a Brush and a Cup

Today, February 12th, we raise our cups to a treat that’s stood the test of time—it’s Biscotti Day! In the world of cookies, biscotti reign as the crunchiest, dippable delights. My daily watercolor captures this twice-baked treasure alongside a steaming cup, inviting you to savor not just a snack, but a slice of history.

Born in ancient Rome, biscotti were the travel buddies of Roman soldiers, thanks to their durable nature. Made from flour, water, nuts, and honey, these hardtack snacks were built to last. The name ‘biscotti,’ rooted in the Latin words ‘bis’ (twice) and ‘coctum’ (cooked), speaks to their journey from oven to history books.

Painting these iconic cookies, I’ve tried to echo their textured simplicity and enduring charm. Just as every brushstroke adds depth, every bake gave biscotti its characteristic snap—the perfect crunch that withstands the dip into your coffee or tea.

So, here’s to the humble biscotti, a cookie that has marched from the Roman legions to modern coffee breaks, becoming softer in recipe but never in spirit. Let’s dunk them in honor of the ingenuity that brought them here, and the artistry that continues to reinvent them.
