Crunch Time: Celebrating the Irresistible Tortilla Chip!

From Missteps to Milestones: The Crispy History of Tortilla Chips

As we crunch into February 24th, it’s time to pay homage to a snack that has danced on the tongues and delighted the palates of millions: the tortilla chip. This crunchy marvel, often enjoyed with a side of zesty salsa or smothered in gooey cheese, didn’t just appear out of thin air; it has a history as flavorful as its taste.

In the vibrant strokes of watercolor on my daily journal page, we celebrate Tortilla Chip Day, honoring an accidental invention that turned into a global phenomenon. It all began in the 1940s, when Rebecca Webb Carranza, looking to salvage misshapen tortillas from her factory, decided to cut them into triangles and fry them up. Little did she know, she was creating a timeless staple for snack lovers everywhere.

The same goes for nachos, which were innovated out of necessity and ingenuity by maître d’ Ignacio “Nacho” Anaya, who whipped up the first batch for famished military wives. This serendipitous creation married tortilla chips and cheese, launching a beloved snacking tradition.

In my painting, I’ve swirled together the golden yellows and vibrant greens that bring tortilla chips to life, capturing their simple yet satisfying essence. Let’s lift our salty, cheesy bites to the sky and toast to these modest triangles that hold a special place in our hearts and snack bowls.
